Spiral: A Simple and Abstract Floor Lamp

A Lamp of Simplicity and Abstraction

The Spiral floor lamp, designed by Marco - Yongge Wu, is a stunning example of simplicity and abstraction in design. Inspired by the goal of creating a lamp that is both simple and interesting, Wu set out to design a lamp using only a single line to demonstrate the main body. The result is a lamp that can be crafted out of one piece of metal, with no redundant parts attached. The clean and simple design is visually intriguing, with a focus on the relationship between space and shape.

One of the unique properties of the Spiral lamp is its base, which gives the illusion of being two-dimensional. However, the base is made from triangle shapes, the most stable geometry, and serves as a solid foot for the entire lamp. When viewed from different angles, the shape of the base changes, adding to the lamp's visual interest. The design is simple yet complex, with a playfulness that captivates the viewer.

The Spiral lamp is made using polished steel and features a rechargeable LED tube light. With dimensions of 28cm width, 23.8cm depth, and 170cm height, it is a sleek and elegant addition to any modern residence. The lamp functions not only as a functional lighting piece but also as a conceptual and sculptural work of art.

Throughout the design process, Wu faced challenges, particularly in designing the triangle base. He had to ensure that the base remained true to his original design while also being solid enough to support the upper part of the lamp. Through consultation with an engineering friend, Wu carefully considered the length, thickness, and bending angle of the tube to create a base that is both visually striking and structurally sound.

The Spiral lamp was created in Champaign, United States, with the project starting in December 2015 and finishing in February 2016. Wu's research focused on eliminating the need for a cord in the design, as he believed it would detract from the lamp's clean and simple aesthetic. By replacing the cord with a rechargeable LED light, Wu was able to maintain the integrity of the design while also enhancing its overall appearance.

The Spiral lamp has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2016, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life. The Spiral lamp is a testament to Wu's ingenuity and resourcefulness in creating a design that is both visually captivating and functional.
